Beauty of the Earth

Kenton L Living as Anabaptists

On the other end of Illinois from the prairies of Lake county in the north lies the rolling landscape of the south with natural treasures like the Shawnee National Forest. In a recent visit there, I was inspired by the striking beauty at the Garden of the Gods, where the layers of rock formations point to ancient eras of sediment. I was reminded of earlier peoples who must have not only appreciated the scenery but also sought protection that the overhangs provide. Signs in surrounding areas broadly recount a history and matter of factly note that natives were ‘removed’ as settlers came to the region. As I think about the ways people are pushed and pulled across the globe, I wish we could learn ways to retain the beauty of the land and peoples with reconciliation for all.
